In 1993, Letterman was courted by NBC to take over The Tonight Show from Jay Leno, who had only recently been given the slot after Johnny Carson's retirement. Letterman's high weekly show wages, however, as well as his reluctance to move the show's production to Los Angeles, ultimately led to a breakdown in negotiations. In 1983, Letterman was hired to host a late-night talk show on CBS, which became a huge success. He remained on CBS until his retirement in 2015.
